Pedagogy
- Our principle concern at Sphairos is your child’s wellbeing. Only when children feel safe and secure can they actively take part in the learning process with their teacher.
- “Learning by Doing“: Our teachers come from all over the world and your child will come into contact with different cultures, which will widen their view of the world. This is the intercultural dimension of Sphairos.
- Learning at Sphairos is tailored to each child – the goals of the course change with the age and needs of the children.
Children in Kindergarden
Competence in listening and speaking come naturally: all five senses come into play. And playing is essential. Only by playing can the child learn how to love learning languages and practicing regularly. At our language school in Munich, the child builds, sings and makes crafts with the teacher, who is not only a caregiver but also a native speaker. For the teachers it is only natural to communicate with the children in English, French or another language. The children also learn about the foreign culture, for example how people behave differently in the teacher’s home country. Naturalness is very important: the language is a means of communication in class, not a competition. When communication is primary, curiosity and the desire to learn the new language are automatically awoken.
Children in Primary School
Children 7 and up start learning the system of their own language in school, including reading, writing, grammar and spelling. When they discover rules in their own language, they also compare English or French with their mother tongue. This way children can acquire two different “language systems” at the same time.
The Sphairos teaching method tailored to this age group is perfect for kids and combines games in the new language with productions in the new language. These are small projects in Munich and the surrounding areas in which the child can use the new vocabulary and grammatical structures. Because these are games, there is no pressure and no competition. The children don’t even realize they are learning. The language is used only as a means of communication. Playing Monoply in English or French, the children must express themselves correctly so that the other players can understand and react. This also helps develop listening skills, because communication has to go both ways.
Our learning method is absolutely not about memorizing vocabulary lists and grammar: children learn better with games and songs! The support we offer at Sphairos puts motivation and joy of learning first.
Secondary School
Older children and students have different needs from the younger children. They are confronted with grades and stress in school and the teachers don’t always have the time to work with the children individually. The weaker students and also the especially talented ones fall by the wayside, become distracted or get bored. Our conversation courses, school projects and journalism language camps are a way of giving these children self-confidence, motivation and excitement. This means the course groups are small, the program has a clear goal and the teaching method is tailored to the students. Roleplays are one way to win over shy students to using the language. The teachers see where the problems are and adapt the program to what the students need to learn and practice.
